We have served in YWAM since 1989. The first 19 years I was mainly involved in teaching,
and a lot of administration/leadership responsibilities. Suzanne directed a pro-life ministry
called The Pregnancy Center. In 2008 we followed the Lord's leading to leave Hawai'i and
move to Chico, CA. I have jokingly said that, that was my retirement. By which I meant that I
was putting on a new set of tires!! From spending most of my time in meetings and offices to
now being on the field in Mexico.
My ministry now consists of leading groups from Canada and the US into the Mexican state
of Baja California; to build houses or serve at an orphanage. The people that we serve in the
Baja are field workers who earn about US$10 per day. Many live on dirt floors, in houses
made of wooden pallets and cardboard, covered over by plastic tarps. An entire family of six
or eight will live in a 12' x 12' space, share one old mattress or sleep on a piece of cardboard
on the ground; their few belongings stacked in a corner. When it rains...they get wet. When
it's windy...their stuff blows around. I have the blessing of speaking Spanish. This allows me
to develop deeper relationships with some of the people: personal counseling, family ministry, etc. And to lead
many to Christ. I have been able to preach in some of the churches and to serve as a
translator for the teams that I lead. In the course of a year, I go to the Baja at least 12 times
and am there for a week each time. I still teach in the YWAM DTS and take care of the
immigration needs of our staff and students.
